4 out of 5 stars The Best One Yet   May 9, 2009

Clan of the Nakagamis: The Devil Cometh is simply as equally hilarious as the first one. Like the first book, this one continues to explore the dynamics of the love relationship that is experienced by Tokio (the male math teacher) and Haruka (his male student).

The Devil Cometh virtually exists in two parts. First, another member of the Nakagami family is introduced (Hibari Nakagami, heir to the Nakagami Group business firm) and his attempt to get what he wants through any means possible (basically someone to fall in love with) is explored. Second, the adventure of Hibari Nakagami, Takamaru Nakagami, and Kijinojyo Nakagami, on an island that supposedly has treasure on it is explored. For the sake of not spoiling the story, the separation of the story into these two segments is actually quite interesting. The addition of adventure definitely goes beyond that which the first Clan of the Nakagamis offered (affectionate situations between Tokio and Haruka). The romance between male couples is still present but there are large segments in which the romance is actually driven by other scenarios, such as finding the treasure, medicines, or other element. Fortunately, this time around the story is not in a complete mess and is actually quite enjoyable.

One of the problems with The Devil Cometh lies in the character cast. In order to get the full understanding of the story, one needs to definitely reread it more than twice. Several of the characters almost look alike and it will take awhile getting used to committing their names to memory. To make it even more challenging for readers, from my understanding, it appears that there are two characters who love to cross dress. The writer, Homerun Ken, seems to include a reference to what some people must be thinking in the fact that one panel says that "Kiji, youre just confusing everyone--stop dressing like a woman." However, Kiji is probably one of the most recognizable characters, as well as Haruka, Tokio, and Hibari. Unless the reader has been following along closely, they will quickly lose track of which character is speaking or even which character is in the panel.

The Devil Cometh stays close to the formula as the first one. The most intense a seen will get is a near "make-out" attempt however these are quickly cut brief before they even happen by, at times, hilarious events. These are definitely a huge highlight, for the way that Homerun Ken does these is extremely entertaining.

The art design is similar to the first as well. One of the aspects that was greatly appreciated in the first one was that the male characters actually looked like males. This is a great aspect. There are virtually only two or three females in the story (excluding the questionable at times Kiji). Graphically all of the characters look lifelike, with very detailed aspects, faces, etc. Environments are greatly detailed, both indoors and outdoors. The font is clear and legible. Instead of including a glossary, any Japanese words that need explaining are explained at the bottom of the panel. Sound effects and the like are also all over the panels as well. Virtually, a pretty solid offering on the graphic front.

All in all, this one is perhaps the best effort yet for the Nakagamis. It is hilarious, fun, adventurous, and Hibari and Kiji are amazing, lol. Definitely get this one. Also, if you missed the first Clan of the Nakagami's, the only thing that you are really missing is the formal introduction of the family and Tokio and Haruka relationship. You could essentially start off with this one and be caught up on what happened in the first book.
