4 out of 5 stars Great length   August 3, 2010

Ah, who hasn't dreamed of the timeless classic of friends becoming lovers? Atsu is complex, acting tough and carefree to the rest of the world but he's a sensitive guy and his best friend Junya knows that he's a gentle guy. Junya is tough, and incredibly handsome and his devotion to Atsu is touching. To me, the funniest part are with the chub Elizabeth the cat. Not much of a plot and at times I did get a little confused, but that cleared up when I read it again. Atsu and Junya have a very hard time not having sex with each other. It's great, it's fun, it's sexy and it's funny.

2 out of 5 stars Bad end to an average beginning   February 11, 2010

Plot: Childhood friends Atsu and Junya are now attending university together. Junya, who has long harbored feelings for his friend, finally says something about it. Atsu decides pretty quickly that he can sleep with his friend. But can he love him? Yes, it's a book where you pretty much are just waiting for them to say "I love you". In the meantime, there's a *lot* of sex to keep you (and the characters!) occupied.

The Dog and Cat theme falls by the wayside throughout much of the book. Actual dogs and cats are depicted, and they're cute, but the animal characteristics of the two main characters are only touched on in brief moments, and in quite literal ways. There are several images of the characters with ears, though, if that's your thing.

The problem I have with the plot is that a fairly lighthearted sex romp ends with a somewhat brutal rape scene. "No" is clearly said, pain is expressed and there's blood on the sheets to make the aggressor feel bad in the morning. But this is BL rape, so, you know, the two characters gloss it over pretty quickly in the name of love.

Although there is making up, cuddling and hearts flying around after, the rape scene is the final detailed sex scene of the book. I wouldn't say the plot goes *completely* dark, (there's a flimsy excuse at-hand that the victim uses to dismiss the aggressor's actions) but the scene still left a bad taste in my mouth right at the end of the story. I wanted to enjoy this book as a cute sex romp, but I don't find clear acts of rape sexy, no matter how easily the characters can dismiss it.

I suppose I should give credit to the mangaka for making the scene a definitive act of rape, even if she wrote to immediately "take it back". Most of the time, I have doubts or confusion as to whether I'm reading a rape scene or not in BL manga, but, I have to admit, it's the shadow of doubt that allows me to more easily get past such scenes.

As for the art, I found Junya to be consistently drawn, but Atsu (the shorter "cat" character) ranged from super-cute and almost too young looking, to as perfectly adult and sexy as Junya. The backgrounds are detailed and the characters all look different from one another. The adult scenes are detailed - no missing parts. The book contains a color insert, but it's the same image as the back cover, which always makes me wonder why the publisher wastes money on it.

I would have given this book 3 stars as average fare, but the non-con scene marring the end of the book for me makes this a two-star review.

Dog X Cat/Yoshimi Amasaki
801 Media -- 18+ Rating -- 222 Pages

Quick Synopsis:

Atsu and Junya are childhood friends. Junya has been in love with Atsu for as long as he can remember and finally decides to confess his feelings to his best friend.

Plot/Readability:

Dog X Cat is the perfect representation of yaoi. Plot? What plot? For a title with so many pages I sure did have a hard time finding any true conflict. It certainly isn't a unique plot by any means; two best friends, one secretly in love with the other. He confesses his love and the rest of the story deals with the relationship you know they're going to have. Usually this is where we find all kinds of hills and valleys in the way of relationship issues that make them stronger as a couple but not so much here.

Character Development:

Although there wasn't a lot of character development, I did enjoy how the mangaka gave each character animal type traits both in their actions and in how they were periodically illustrated. Atsu was the cat while Junya was more like the dog Atsu always wanted, thus the title of Dog X Cat. Also, each chapter is titled either Dog X Cat or Cat X Dog based on whose perspective that chapter is written from (as in either Atsu is the one talking or Junya).

Illustrations:

This mangaka needs a little more work on how to draw hands and feet. Besides the face, hands and feet are two of the hardest parts of the human anatomy to master so I feel her pain! She gets points for cute factor though. She included a lot of illustrations of cats and dogs, not to mention the cat and dog representations of our characters and they were all absolutely adorable! I found myself chuckling more than a few times while reading this one and I think you will, too.

Sexual Explicitness:

You'll be hard pressed to find two boys hornier than these two. Every chance they get, they seem to be going at it. Is this an explicit read? Oh yeah. Will you get your fill of sex? You know it! I don't think you will be disappointed in this one. I've seen sex scenes executed better in how the mangaka chooses to illustrate them but this one gets the job done.

Final Thoughts:
There's nothing I love to see more than a yaoi title with so many pages and this one doesn't disappoint in length. If you're looking for something with some plot or even a tiny bit of originality to it, this isn't the title for you. Having said that, I still read all 200+ pages without being bored to tears so I think the high cute factor and the occasional chuckle it gave me was enough to keep me interested. That and the sex. We can't forget the pages and pages of weepy, blushy, nipply bishies that seem to have a very hard time keeping their clothes on.

Side note: 801 Media had a contest awhile back to design the 801-Chan strip that goes in the back. There were six winners chosen and this one included a strip with a storyline provided by Lissa Pattillo who many of you know from Kuriousity and the new Boys-Luv.com websites. Congrats Lissa!

5 out of 5 stars Dog tested, Cat approved   December 7, 2009

Dog x Cat is a fine addition to any Yaoi collection, containing engaging characters, an interesting plot and an occasionally playful touch that is very enjoyable to read (if starting from an often used premise, as R.Parklane mentions, of childhood-friends-becoming-more).

Their tale truly begins with Junya telling Atsu that he likes him in the `wanting to jump his bones way', which is startling and a bit scary for Atsu. We discover as the story progresses that Atsu is surprisingly complex, seeming to be carefree and a player to an outside observer; he is a sensitive and thoughtful individual. Junya is not only his childhood friend, but the person who knows Atsu most, which is delved into in an extremely heartwarming scene.

Junya shines as not only the dark haired hunk of the book, but as a man steadfast in his devotion, and yes, his devotion is aggressively physical in nature.

This is a satisfying manga, with plenty of sex and attractively drawn characters. And, I admit, as a cat lover, I particularly enjoyed the scenes with Junya's cat, Elizabeth.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful and sexy!   November 21, 2009

This is one great release from 801 media. Plenty of smex for Yaoi fans and such lovely and vivid artwork. So it is the usual 2 childhood friends turned lovers but there is not one dull page. Both Atsu (cat) and Junya (dog) are such adorable characters as they dance around each other and struggle with their insecurities and jealousies. Junya is just my type of seme, gorgeous and moody, while Atsu is the endearing uke and with his penchant to please, he is often taken for granted by friends much to Junya's chagrin. The last chapter maybe a bit uncomfortable for some but it is also the part of the story with a heavier tone. All the explicit sex scenes are pure delight. The one in the school is especially sexy. Add a cat and a dog into the mix sometimes, and the sex is never dull. LOL. As for the chibis with their cat/dog ears and tails, they are just so cute! Over 220 pages, Dog X Cat is pure charm.
